For years, residents and businesses across Ipswich and Suffolk have been crying out for a solution to our worsening traffic problems.
The pressure on our roads has become unbearable. Whenever the Orwell Bridge is closed or disrupted, our entire transport network grinds to a halt. People are stuck in hours of congestion. Freight is delayed. Local economies suffer.
That is why I have been leading the campaign for a Northern Bypass — and why Labour has fought so hard to bring this project back to the table.
This week’s vote at Suffolk County Council marks a major breakthrough. After sustained pressure from Labour councillors and the local community, the Council has finally backed the creation of a Northern Bypass.
Let us be clear — this would not have happened without Labour.
We brought the motion. We built cross-party support. We pushed the Council to act after years of dithering and delay.
Now it is time for Suffolk County Council to stop dragging its feet, produce the necessary plans and get moving. If they do, I will work alongside them to make sure we get the funding we need from Government.
A Northern Bypass will not only relieve traffic in the north of Ipswich and surrounding villages — it will unlock growth across Suffolk, protect the Port of Felixstowe, and ensure our region can thrive for decades to come.
In just the past year, we have already delivered real progress: investment and jobs through Sizewell C, funding to fix unsafe buildings in Ipswich, upgrades to the A12, and new resources for public services.
Now we are putting the Northern Bypass back on the agenda — and I will not stop until we see shovels in the ground.
