10th June- Jack Abbott Comments on Winter Fuel Payment Restoration

Today’s announcement that Winter Fuel Payments will be restored for all pensioners earning under £35,000 is absolutely the right decision — and one that I warmly welcome.

When changes were first introduced to better target support at the most vulnerable, I acknowledged that it was a difficult and emotive issue. Given the state of the public finances left behind by the previous Conservative government, it was a necessary step to stabilise the economy and make our welfare system fairer.

But I also said I would listen — and I meant it.

Many of you got in touch with me directly to share your concerns, and I took those conversations seriously. I raised them with colleagues, pushed for a review, and I’m pleased that the Government has listened too.

This change means thousands more pensioners across Ipswich will now receive the help they need to stay warm this winter. It comes alongside the 4.1% pension increase secured through the triple lock — a vital source of financial security in tough times.

To me, this is what responsible government looks like: making honest, sometimes difficult decisions, but also adapting when it’s right to do so — always in the best interests of the people I represent.
