On 19th December 2024, faced with fresh closures of the Orwell Bridge, I once again urged local decisionmakers to come together to find a solution to the perennial chaos our town faces every time there is disruption on the Orwell Bridge. I know that local residents and businesses are sick to the back teeth with the all-too-frequent disruptions.
Last month, I met with local MPs, business leaders, and other important stakeholders in our town to discuss this very issue. This meeting was an important step in discussing the mitigations we need to relieve some pressure in the short-term.
But, it is clear that we cannot keep shirking the long-term solutions, either. Ipswich- and Suffolk, more widely- needs an alternative route to the Orwell Bridge, or we will keep feeling the impact over and over again.
I urged all local stakeholders to recognise this reality, and the consequences for our town and our county if this keeps getting kicked into the long grass. For my part, I will continue to make the case at governmental level, too.
