19th December 2024 - Jack Abbott MP supports legislation to crack down on water bosses

On 19th December, I was proud to back the Government's major new legislation for the water sector, which will deliver the most significant increase in enforcement powers for a decade, including imposing tougher penalties for law-breaking, including a ban on bonuses, and even imprisonment for law-breaking water bosses.

Recent statistics show that, between 2022 and 2023, there was an eye-watering 97% increase to 4061 sewage dumps in Suffolk's 8 constituencies, marking an increase of 247% in duration, to 26,650 hours.

That is, by any measure, simply unacceptable. That is why I am supporting this tough, immediate action to end the disgraceful behaviour of water companies and their bosses. No longer will they be able to line their pockets whilst pumping out this filth.

This Bill is a major step forward in the Government's wider reform to fix the broken water system. I look forward to supporting further legislation to fundamentally transform how the water industry is run and speed up the delivery of upgrades to our sewage infrastructure to clean up our waterways for good.
