In an opinion piece for 'The House' magazine, Jack Abbott MP has underlined the transformational impact that Sizewell C could have for Ipswich and the wider Suffolk region, calling it a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to boost energy security, create thousands of skilled jobs, and put Suffolk at the heart of the UK’s clean energy future.
Jack said:
“Sizewell C is more than just a power station – it’s a chance to rewrite the story for our region. It will bring thousands of secure, skilled jobs, attract investment, and help tackle the climate crisis head-on.”
Through a formal agreement signed last year, Jack has secured at least 500 jobs for local people during the station’s decade-long construction. The deal also includes major investment in education and skills, supporting Suffolk New College and the University of Suffolk to expand engineering, welding, and fabrication training.
Key elements include:
• Development of a Welding Centre of Excellence
• Scoping of an Electrical Engineering Centre of Excellence
• Regional Construction Skills Roadshow
• Biannual local jobs fairs hosted in partnership with Sizewell C
With Sizewell C set to supply power to six million homes and support 8,000 jobs at peak construction – a third of them locally – Jack is calling on businesses and educational institutions to seize the moment.
“I want Suffolk to be a leader – not just in nuclear, but in wind, solar and green innovation too. This could be a golden age for our county, and I’ll make sure Ipswich is front and centre.”
