Jack Abbott Launches
2026 Summer School

As Ipswich’s local Member of Parliament, Jack Abbott MP is committed to using his position to help young people start their careers in politics, public service and campaigning. Jack was given his chance in politics through a summer school, and now he wants to give the same chance to the next generation.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural summer school which saw participants lead real world campaigns in Ipswich, secure over 80 local business pledges to improve accessibility for assistance dog users, and deliver a campaign reaching around 10,000 people on support for young unpaid carers, the programme is returning for 2026.

This year, 16 selected individuals aged 18 to 24 will take part in a two week immersive programme designed to build practical skills, confidence, and experience in public life. Participants will also have opportunities to meet speakers from across public service, journalism, campaigning, and politics.

The programme will run from Monday 10th to Friday 21st August 2026. The first week will include intensive training sessions led by experts, workshops on campaigning, communications, and public speaking, and a visit to Parliament. The second week will be based in Ipswich where participants will work in teams to design and deliver local campaigns focused on issues affecting the community.

Last year’s participants gained experience speaking to media outlets, working with local organisations, and engaging directly with the public. Many described the experience as a turning point in their confidence and understanding of how change is made in practice.

Applications are now open.

To apply, applicants must complete the application form and return it to jack.abbott.mp@parliament.uk by 17:00 on Friday 19th June 2026.

All applicants must be aged 18 to 24 and available during the programme dates.

Previous experience in campaigning or community work may support an application but is not essential. We particularly welcome applications from those who are underrepresented in politics or who may not have previously considered a role in public life.

There is no cost to take part in the Summer School. Travel and expense support may be available for those who would otherwise be unable to participate. Anyone facing financial barriers is encouraged to contact the office to discuss support options.

You do not need to be a member of any political party to apply.
