24th February marked the third anniversary of Russia’s illegal and brutal invasion of Ukraine. Marking the anniversary, I reiterated the UK’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian people have made such great sacrifices in the defence of their country, for which all of Europe must be grateful. I also want to express, on behalf of our town, my gratitude to the charities, local organisations and individuals in Ipswich and across the UK who have provided aid and shelter to those displaced by the war.
In 2025, the Government has strengthened support for Ukraine, including a new package of military aid and an industrial treaty worth £3.5 billion to increase the production of military hardware. Following the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Ukraine, the UK has also signed a historic 100-year partnership with Ukraine, aimed at fostering trade, cultural links, and military collaboration.
In November, I asked Foreign Secretary David Lammy in the House of Commons, urging him to ensure Ukrainian children and young people receive the education they need to rebuild their country (video above). Additionally, during recent a meeting with General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK, he discussed the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainians, particularly those who have been forced to flee the war.
My commitment- and the government’s commitment- to Ukraine remains firm, and we will not waver in our support for their fight for freedom, democracy, and sovereignty.
