Speaking on BBC Politics East this weekend, Ipswich MP Jack Abbott confirmed that the Labour government will introduce a new pay review body for social care workers.
Jack highlighted one of the biggest challenges facing the sector: recruitment and retention. Low pay has driven many people away from pursuing a career in care, leading to an overreliance on migrant labour to fill the gaps.
“As part of our Employment Rights Bill,” Jack said, “we’re creating an Adult Social Care Negotiating Body that will bring together trade unions and employers to agree fair pay and improved conditions for workers.”
Jack also welcomed the upcoming 6.7% National Living Wage increase, which he supported in the recent Budget, saying it was a vital step toward valuing the people who deliver such essential care in our communities.
