Today, we commemorate 80 years since VE Day — a moment to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and service of those who fought for freedom, democracy, and peace.
Eighty years ago, hundreds of thousands of courageous young men secured Britain’s greatest victory, defending Europe from Nazism and fascism. In Ipswich alone, 660 lives were lost in this terrible conflict.
As the numbers of those who served dwindle each year, it is vital we remember their sacrifice and celebrate the values they defended — values that remain central to our democracy and way of life today.
British troops continue to defend these ideals worldwide. It was moving to see Ukrainian armed forces march alongside our troops in the national VE Day parade, a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for freedom.
Here in Ipswich, I was honoured to stand with veterans and service members at our Cenotaph, and to see the heartfelt national celebrations, including the Red Arrows flyover over Suffolk.
Our debt to veterans can never be fully repaid, but our Government is taking real steps to show support. Between 2022 and 2024, veteran reliance on Universal Credit rose by 65%, reflecting the struggles many face despite their service.
That’s why I am proud of the new VALOUR support system launched this week. Backed by £50 million, VALOUR will ensure veterans across Ipswich, Suffolk, and the East of England receive tailored care, employment help, and support — putting an end to the postcode lottery of care.
This is a landmark moment to honour not only the Second World War generation but all veterans who have served with courage and distinction.
They had our backs. Now, we have theirs.
