Jack Abbott Welcomes Major Upgrades to Five Ipswich GP Surgeries

Residents in Ipswich often tell me how frustrating it is to face the dreaded ‘8am scramble’ just to get a GP appointment. That’s why I pledged that Labour would bring back the family doctor — and with 1,500 new GPs already recruited, our Labour government is delivering on that promise.
But we’re not stopping there. We said we would fix the front door of the NHS — and now we’re improving the front, sides, back, and every room in between.
Today, I’m proud to welcome the announcement that five GP surgeries in Ipswich are set to receive brick-and-mortar upgrades — the biggest investment in GP facilities here in years.
The government recently announced a £102 million national investment to improve NHS clinics, and Ipswich is benefiting with upgrades planned for:
Hawthorn Drive’s Chantry Clinic
Ivry Street Medical Practice
Derby Road Practice
Cardinal Medical Practice
Pinewood Surgery
These upgrades will help increase capacity and deliver faster care for local patients.
There are also ongoing talks with Ipswich Borough Council about converting the former Inkerman pub on Norwich Road into an administrative centre with consulting rooms for Cardinal Medical Practice — Ipswich’s largest practice with over 27,000 registered patients.
This development follows the scrapping of plans for an £8 million ‘super surgery’ at the Tooks site, which was originally intended to house the Cardinal Medical Practice.
I’m pleased to see these concrete steps to improve healthcare services for Ipswich residents, and I will continue to push for better access and investment in our local NHS.
