On 11th September, I wrote to National Highways regarding the latest closure of the Orwell Bridge, to ask for proper clarity about the timescale of the emergency works that forced the bridge’s partial closure.
Simply put, delays cannot keep happening, leaving the town and surrounding area in gridlock. I also raised with National Highways the need for a serious conversation about mitigations and alternatives.
Following my intervention, National Highways provided the following response:
“Works are programmed to commence on Friday [13th September 2024] for this complex operation and will continue into next week.
“For safety reasons there will be two overnight full closures of the westbound carriageway between 9pm and 5am Tuesday (17 September) and Wednesday (18 September). The road is scheduled to fully reopen at 5am on Thursday (19 September)."
