Jack Abbott has reaffirmed his long-standing support for Ipswich becoming a city, as the Borough Council launches a new Culture and Heritage Strategy aimed at unlocking the town’s full potential.
The MP welcomed the Council’s commitment to developing a strategy that not only celebrates Ipswich’s rich history but also positions the town for future opportunities—such as bids for City of Culture and city status itself.
Jack said:
“Ipswich Borough Council’s Culture and Heritage Strategy celebrates our town’s history, while looking to write new chapters for our future. I’m a long-time supporter of city status—it would boost tourism, attract investment, and put us firmly on the national map.”
Jack has already opened talks with government ministers about a City of Culture 2029 bid, which has drawn strong support from local organisations including the Ipswich Society, Brighten The Corners, and the Thomas Wolsey 550 project.
He added:
“Essex now has three cities—Suffolk should have one too. For a town of Ipswich’s size, creativity and heritage, city status just makes sense.”
