31st October 2024 - Jack Abbott MP welcomes a Budget to fix the foundations

On 31st October, Rachel Reeves delivered the first Labour budget in nearly 15 years, and the first in history to be delivered by a woman. In it, she showed that this is a government ready to fix the foundations of our economy and our public services to restore stability and support working people.

The Chancellor’s decision to boost investment and rebuild our public services will ensure our country is fairer, more prosperous, and geared towards growth. I particularly welcome the extra £25 billion for the NHS, in addition to billions more for education too. Our public services need both reform and investment, and this Budget delivers on that.

An additional £1 billion for special educational needs provision is really critical too. Whilst it cannot solve the crisis overnight, it marks crucial progress on an issue I have campaigned on for over many years.

This Budget illustrates the key political choice facing our country; investing in Britain’s present and future with a Labour government delivering for working people, or five more years of the same Conservative failure that crashed our economy, left our public services in tatters, and covered up a £22 billion black hole in the public finances.

Despite the dire inheritance the Conservatives left our government, this Budget starts to deliver the change people voted for in July. It marks the start of a new era for our county and our country; with a more resilient economy, stronger public services, and greater prosperity, shared by working people in every community right across our country.
