On the 8th of January, I pledged my full support Labour’s Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill. The bill proposes landmark reforms, including measures to improve school standards, ease cost of living for parents, and strengthen children’s safeguarding.
It also begins the delivery of free breakfast clubs for every primary school child in Ipswich and caps the number of branded uniform items that schools can make mandatory, saving parents a up to £500 over the course of a year.
Before entering Parliament, I was Labour’s spokesman for children’s services and education on Suffolk County Council and previously worked as a teaching assistant at a local school, so I know first-hand just how transformative these measures can and will be for the household finances of families and the life chances of children in Ipswich.
And from speaking to parents in our town, I know how much they will value having a free breakfast club at their local primary, a cheaper back to school shop, and higher standards for their children within the classroom. I’ll back this legislation every step of the way so we can break down the barriers to opportunity for children in our town and our county.
